Written at the request of Charles Dickens North and South is a book about rebellion it poses fundamental questions about the nature of social authority and obedience Gaskell expertly blends individual feeling with social concern and her heroine Margaret Hale is one of the most original creations of Victorian literature .

When Margaret Hale s father leaves the Church in a crisis of conscience she is forced to leave her comfortable home in the tranquil countryside of Hampshire and move with her family to the fictional industrial town of Milton in the north of England Though at first disgusted by her new surroundings she witnesses the brutality wrought by the Industrial Revolution and becomes aware of the poverty and suffering of the local mill workers Sympathetic to the poor she makes friends among them and develops a fervent sense of social justice She clashes with the mill owner and self made man John Thornton who is contemptuous of his workers However their fierce opposition masks a deeper attraction .

Gaskell based her depiction of Milton on Manchester where she lived as the wife of a Unitarian minister She was an accomplished writer much of her work published in Charles Dickens magazine Household Words including North and South which was originally published as a serial She was also friends with Charlotte Bront and after her death her father Patrick Bront chose Gaskell to write The Life of Charlotte Bront by Elizabeth Gaskell, Françoise du Sorbier

i Even in the stillness of that dead cold weather I had heard no sound of little battering hands upon the window glass i br br A phantom child roams the Northumberland moors while a host of fairytale characters gone to seed gather in the dark dark woods in these two surprising tales of the uncanny from the great Victorian novelist, b It is in every way worthy of what one great woman should have written of another b Patrick Bront br br Elizabeth Gaskell s i The Life of Charlotte Bront i is a pioneering biography of one great Victorian woman novelist by another br br Gaskell was a friend of Charlotte Bront and having been invited to write the official life determined both to tell the truth and to honour her friend She contacted those who had known Charlotte and travelled extensively in England and Belgium to gather material She wrote from a vivid accumulation of letters interviews and observation establishing the details of Charlotte s life and recreating her background Through an often difficult and demanding process Gaskell created a vital sense of a life hidden from the world br br This edition is based on the Third Edition of revised by Gaskell It has been collated with the manuscript and the previous two editions as well as with Charlotte Bront s letters and thus offers fuller information about the process of composition than any previous edition, When her father leaves the Church in a crisis of conscience Margaret Hale is uprooted from her comfortable home in Hampshire to move with her family to the north of England Initially repulsed by the ugliness of her new surroundings in the industrial town of Milton Margaret becomes aware of the poverty and suffering of the local mill workers and develops a passionate sense of social justice This is intensified by her tempestuous relationship with the mill owner and self made man John Thornton as their fierce opposition over his treatment of his employees masks a deeper attraction br br In i North and South i Elizabeth Gaskell skillfully fuses individual feeling with social concern and in Margaret Hale creates one of the most original heroines of Victorian literature, Two of English writer Elizabeth Gaskell s best selling books are bound together in this Kindle book Ruth amp North and South br br Ruth br Ruth a British orphan girl who works in a sweatshop is selected to attend a ball to repair torn dresses and meets aristocrat Henry Bellingham They meet again and form a secret friendship which goes horribly wrong for Ruth br She is helped by a dissenting minister but soon discovers she is pregnant br The novel is a compassionate look at the fallen woman and whether the sinful can be reintegrated into Victorian society br br North and South br North and South along with With Wives and Daughters and Cranford is one of Gaskell s best known novels and produced two television adaptations br The novel tackles the situation of workers and their relations with industrialists in the fictional town of Milton northern England and has favourably compared to the Shirley by Gaskell s friend Charlotte Bront br It revolves around Margaret Hale who settles with her parents in Milton in the throws of the industrial revolution She clashes with John Thornton a cotton mill manufacturer who belongs to the nouveaux riches The confrontation between her and Mr Thornton is reminiscent of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Darcy in Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen br br About The Author br Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell referred to as Mrs Gaskell was a British novelist and short story writer during the Victorian era She was also the first to write a biography of Charlotte Bronte The Life of Charlotte Bronte which was published in br In North and South Gaskell creates the city of Milton based on Manchester nicknamed Cottonopolis where she lived as the wife of a Unitarian pastor She saw religious dissenters and social reformers who decried the abject poverty of this industrial region She described the poor in her writings showing compassion for the oppressed br The last section of Wives and Daughters was not finished upon Elizabeth Gaskell s death and it is believed that Frederick Greenwood a journalist and editor completed the novel
